Why did you apply for a job at HSBC?

Answer: When I made the transition from Canada to Bermuda with a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the financial industry. HSBC attracted me as a potential employee on the basis of the excellent reputation HSBC holds, as well as their international presence. HSBC invests in the growth and development of their employees which is something I favor in an employer.

What do you like most about your job?

Answer: Working at HSBC provides you with the opportunity to work with a variety of individuals from all areas of the bank. Thus far, I have had the opportunity to meet with the CEO, receive guidance and advice from Senior Managers and work on projects with my fellow Graduate Trainees. It is wonderful to work in an environment where you have access to all levels of staff. This has provided me with a great network of professionals as well as increased my knowledge and understanding of the bank as a whole.

What areas of HSBC have you experienced so far?

Answer: Completing the Graduate Development Program has provided me with the opportunity to experience various areas of HSBC over a two year span. I completed a simulation project for our Retail Banking and Wealth Management division as well as a three month secondment in our Technology and Services Organization. I have had the pleasure to live in the United Kingdom for a month where I attended the HSBC Group Graduate Program and met individuals from all over the world. The majority of my rotation was completed in the Payments and Cash Management Department fulfilling numerous roles. I have now completed the Graduate Development Program and work as a Payments and Cash Management Sales Associate.

How has this job helped you in career development?

Answer: HSBC emphasises the development of their employees. They provide accreditation paths for each individual where various classes are provided to enable you to become more educated in your field. They also provide guidance and support if you have the desire to change your career path within the bank. With completing the Graduate Development Program and experiencing various areas within HSBC, it has allowed me to have a better understanding of where I would like to be in the future.

Do you have any words of wisdom regarding careers?

Answer: Always continue to learn, challenge yourself and meet new people. If you feel you are at a standstill in your career, it is up to you to use the knowledge you’ve learned and the network you have built to take the necessary steps to further your career.

Graduate Development Programme

HSBC Bermuda's Graduate Development Programme (GDP) is a two-year programme which provides accelerated training and practical business experience.  The Programme develops core skills within the following areas: leadership, project management, sales and networking, and product knowledge. GDP prepares the Graduate Trainee for a progressive career in the financial services industry.

How to apply

To be eligible for the Graduate Development Programme (GDP), candidates must meet the minimum requirements. To apply for the programme, please email Ronette Burchall at ronette.e.burchall@hsbc.bm. Applications should include:

  • A cover letter outlining why you think you are a suitable applicant as well as the business area you are interested in
  • Current resume that includes education, work experience with HSBC and other organizations and extra-curricular activities
  • Proof of Bermudian citizenship
  • Two character references, including at least one from a faculty member of your university
  • A copy of your transcripts/degree certificate or other relevant proof of GPA and graduate qualifications

Student employment

Every year, HSBC Bermuda employs between 20 and 30 high school and college/university students during the summer (and about half that number over the Christmas holidays). Students begin their employment relationship with HSBC through a number of different avenues: the Recruit Extraordinary People programme, the Student Trainee programme, work placements, and different scholarship programmes. Holiday employment is a great way for Bermudian students to get a taste of the Financial Services industry, to gain a greater understanding of the roles and types of careers at HSBC, and to also understand where they might best fit when they graduate.

Recruit Extraordinary People programme

Every year, HSBC contacts each of the local high schools and asks them to nominate a Bermudian student from the graduating class based on the following criteria:

  • High academic standing
  • High level of effort and dedication to school work
  • Community Involvement
  • Interest in the Financial Services industry
  • Plans to further education beyond secondary school

HSBC extends to these nominated students a one-year holiday employment contract to commence the summer following their first year of post-secondary education. Students can not apply to this programme, they must be nominated by their high school teachers.

Student Trainee programme

Outside of the structured programmes for students, HSBC Bermuda employs around 25 student trainees annually, to work in various departments of HSBC during their summer and Christmas breaks.

Student Trainee roles are available in many different areas of HSBC during the summer and Christmas school breaks. All Student Trainee roles are filled by college/university level students.

Students interested in applying for a summer job at HSBC Bermuda should do so by 1 March each year. To apply, send a cover letter and resume via email to Ronette Burchall: ronette.e.burchall@hsbc.bm.The cover letter should include the student's date of birth, current education details, areas of interest, and dates of availability. Please ensure that an email address that is checked frequently is included on the resume.

Students who have previously worked at HSBC and are interested in applying for a Christmas holiday job should do so by 31 October each year. Only students with past employment at HSBC will be considered for employment over the Christmas holidays.

Work placements

During secondary and tertiary education programmes, students are often required to gain work experience through a work placement.
